What is a qualified Therapy Dog Team?
A qualified Loving Paws Therapy Team would be an owner and their K9 who sucessfully completed our training and qualification process.
What would I do?
As a qualified team you would volunteer your time to visit facilities and special events locally to share your wonderful dog with others, bring them smiles and happy feelings while following team handling protocol.
How do I become qualified?
Step 1. Contact us and show interest
Setp 2. We will meet with you and your dog for an initial consultation and review.
Step 3. If the review was favorable we will schedule you for team testing and qualification.
All of our Teams must meet our minimum training standards to become fully qualified and participate in our program.
- All handlers must undergo a criminal background check at their own expense immediately following the passing of our evaluation program.
- Handlers must be friendly, outgoing, neat in appearance and enjoy being around people of all ages.
- Dogs must be kept clean and groomed during visits.
- Dogs must be friendly, non agressive, non barking, calm and loving toward all ages of people.
- Dogs should be accepting of loud noise, crowds and tight spaces to walk in.
Training Qualification Program:
You must pass our Qualification Program in order to become a qualified team. Our evaluator will lead the program and provide instructions during the qualification.
1. The Greeting
Team must be able to greet people and other dogs in a friendly, non agressive, non barking manner.
2. Basic Obedience
Dog must follow and obey basic obedience commands (these will be tested):
sit, stay, down, leave it, recall
Dogs are not allowed to bark at any time during any visits and during the entire evaluation program period. All dogs that bark are subject to immediate disqualification from the program.
4. Leave It
Dogs are not allowed to pick up items off the ground/floor and must be able to ingnore them. This will be tested with treats during the evaluation.
5. Walking through tight spaces and equipment
This will be evaluated to make sure dog is acceptable of walking though crowds, people with handling skills, different types of approaches during visits and equipoments such as wheel chairs, canes and more. Dog should show no fear, agression or backing down.
6. Kid Friendly
Dog must be willing to be approached by and handled by children of all ages. This will be evaluated during the program or at another time and place.
7. Other Dogs
Dog must be friendly around other dogs, are not allowed to bark, play agressivley and must obey their handler at all times.
8. The Walk
Dog must walk lose and soft on leash. This will be evaluated while walking through an obsticale course with and without distractions.
IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE REQUIRED?
Yes, once you have passed all steps, all of our dogs must be registered with usdogregistry.org (therapy dog).
Is there a fee for the qualification program?
There is no cost for the initial consultation and for the testing leasding up to full qualification.
The required dogregistry.org registration cost is $79
After you have fully qualified with Loving Paws, there is a one time fee of $100 to cover a portion of the cost for items you will receive (t-shirt, hat, custom dog vest, ID card and car magnet).
